This Day in History: Sept. 26, 1955: MUSC Hospital opens its doors

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – The Medical College Hospital, which we now know as MUSC Hospital, is celebrating its 70th birthday on Friday.

The facility first opened its doors on Sept. 26, 1955. The 10-floor, 465-bed medical facility was built at a cost of $11 million, which would be more than $130 million in today’s dollars.

The hospital was dedicated months earlier, on May 10, 1955.

“It is my sincere hope that this new hospital will provide tangible results in more and improved medical services within our state,” South Carolina Gov. George Bell Timmerman Jr. said at the hospital’s dedication ceremony…
