Warrick County Leaders Warn Of Coal Waste Dam Issues and Flooding Possibilities for Southwestern Indiana

Warrick County leaders warn a coal waste dam at the old AMAX Ayrshire mine could collapse and cause catastrophic flooding. Surveyor Dennis Wilzbacher says the dam holds about 22 million cubic yards of coal refuse that would rush into Pigeon Creek if it breaks, flooding areas from Gibson County to Evansville. The state has rated the dam “high hazard,” meaning its failure could cause loss of life, property damage, and long-term environmental cleanup.
