A Waymo self-driving car caught fire in Mar Vista early Friday morning after a suspect allegedly set the blaze inside the vehicle, authorities said.
Los Angeles police said they were called to the intersection of Inglewood Boulevard and Washington Place around 1:10 a.m. after a Waymo representative reported that someone had lit a fire inside one of the company’s autonomous vehicles.
Fire crews responded to the 4000 block of South Inglewood Boulevard minutes later and found flames burning in the vehicle’s back seat, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. Firefighters had to remove part of the back seat to fully extinguish the blaze.
No injuries were reported. Hazmat teams were not needed because the flames did not spread to the vehicle’s batteries, officials said. The Waymo was later towed from the scene.
