Midtown Carnegie Library Branch celebrating 120 years

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — One of the Springfield Greene County Library District’s oldest branches is celebrating a big birthday and recent renovations this weekend.

The Midtown Carnegie Library Branch was built in 1905 with support from Andrew Carnegie.

“At the time, the president of Drury University reached out to Andrew Carnegie, who was making grants to public libraries all across the nation,” said Eva Pelkey, Branch Manager at the Midtown Carnegie Library. “So the citizens of Greene County decided that they would support a library through a tax levy, and Andrew Carnegie donated $50,000 to actually build the library.”…
