Traffic cameras are becoming a much more common sight in Northern Colorado. In the past few years, speed cameras have been popping up everywhere in Fort Collins, Loveland, and recently Greeley.
CDOT’s $5 Million Statewide Camera Investment
Speed cameras are not only appearing in Northern Colorado, either. The Colorado Department of Transportation announced earlier this year that they are investing $5 million into speed cameras along highways in Colorado to boost safety.
New Cameras Coming to U.S. 36 and Highway 66
Here is an example of those speeding cameras. The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin installing traffic cameras along two Northern Colorado highways, 9News reports.
The new cameras will be along U.S. 26 between Estes Park and Lyons, as well as Highway 66.
Construction Timeline and Traffic Delays in Northern Colorado
The camera installation process will begin on September 29. The Colorado Department of Transportation will begin installing cables. If you drive on this route, you should expect delays for quite a while. 9News reports that the project is estimated to be completed by December 2026.
Advanced Camera Technology vs. Local Systems
This new traffic camera system is more advanced than many others in the state, showing just how many different approaches are being used to monitor drivers and enforce speed limits. For example, the city of Fort Collins introduced transportable speed radar units. They look like giant ATM’s across the city.
