As temperatures cool, it’s the perfect time to get cozy with a blanket and a good book. But enjoying literature doesn’t have to be so solitary, since Madison’s many book clubs offer a social outlet for readers of all interests, locations and commitment levels.
A Room of One’s Own
2717 Atwood Ave.
This independent, feminist book store, which celebrated 50 years of operation in June, offers clubs that reflect its commitment to social justice and inclusivity. A Room of One’s Own hosts three in-house book clubs, the Genre Fluid Book Club and the Lit Study Book Clubs, which meet monthly, and the Abolitionist Book Club, which meets the first and third Saturday of each month.
Lake City Books
107 N. Hamilton St.
Lake City Books’ LitFic book club started in September. Every first Tuesday and Wednesday of the month, members gather to talk about modern literary fiction titles. The store’s intimate space is perfect for a cozy book club atmosphere, and arts-and-crafts like knitting are welcomed during the discussion. The club has already seen immense interest, prompting the store store to start even more book clubs. The first of these additions, the Lake City Romance Book Club, will be meet every second Wednesday of the month to discuss recent romance releases. The store anticipates that even more book club choices will be available come January. Since this event is in high demand, be sure to RSVP on the Lake City Books website to secure your spot for one of the monthly meetings.
Mystery to Me
1863 Monroe St.
The Mystery to Me Book Club, hosted at independent bookstore Mystery to Me every second Wednesday of the month, doesn’t focus on any one genre, so members get a taste of something new each month. Want to join? The club is casual and welcomes walk-ins.
