Victim’s family outraged after convicted killer accidentally released from jail

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A family that believed they had found justice for their loved one’s murder five years ago is angry and heartbroken after the man who killed him was accidentally released from jail just minutes after being convicted.

Wednesday, Anthony Green, 24, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 2020 shooting death of Octavious Atkins,19.

Even though a judge immediately revoked Green’s $500,000 bond, he was released from jail after posting a $2,500 bond in a separate 2024 misdemeanor theft case.

A spokesperson for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said at the time it was the only bond actively holding Green in custody, and jailers were unaware that he had been convicted and his bond had been revoked.
