St. George Brewing Company shines with award-winning brews

HAMPTON, Va. — Tucked away on Challenger Way in Hampton, St. George Brewing Company may be easy to miss, but it’s one of Virginia’s oldest continuously operating craft breweries. Staff say they’ve been slaying ordinary beer for nearly three decades, similarly to St. George, who, legends claim, slayed a dragon.

Founded in 1998, the Hampton brewery recently earned recognition at the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild competition, where three of its beers took home awards, including the “best of show” honor. Among the winners: the Honey Meade Lager, which earned a silver medal and is brewed with honey harvested directly from an apiary on St. George’s property.

“It actually changes flavors slightly each time based on the honey, because the honey’s being made by the bees out back,” said head brewer Scott Batten…
