Houston Renter Paid $1,600 for Moldy Apartment While Making Just $16 an Hour — Says Overtime Was ‘Not Optional’

HOUSTON, TX – A Houston renter is speaking out after revealing they were forced to pay $1,600 per month for a mold-infested apartment while earning just $16 an hour, saying the financial and emotional toll left them feeling “powerless and abandoned.”

Paying High Rent for Dangerous Conditions

The tenant, who posted under the username SENIORSUDS on Reddit, said they lived at the Preserve at Copperleaf before finally moving into a new unit last week that was free of mold.

They explained the rent left them with little choice but to take on endless overtime: “The math will never add up. Overtime is not optional for me.” Even without a car note, the stress was crushing.

Emotional and Financial Strain

The renter described how the mold was ignored by management despite repeated concerns. “It feels like a punch in the gut living in mold and being ignored at your own expense. Everyone will have to answer for what they do in this life.”

The stress only grew worse earlier this month when their car was totaled in an accident, forcing them into an even tighter financial bind.

A Move to Safer Housing

Despite setbacks, the renter said they found hope after relocating: “We don’t have much of anything now but we can breathe, and we have an answered prayer.”
