Acadiana Sugarcane farmers celebrate thriving crop this year

NEW IBERIA, La. (NEWS 15) — Sugarcane farmers across Acadiana are celebrating a bountiful harvest this year. Thanks to plentiful rain over the summer, the crop is thriving.

Farmers like Ricky Gonsoulin, owner of Gonsoulin Farms, are working tirelessly from dawn to dusk to harvest the cane and transport it to the mills. Gonsoulin Farms is hauling thousands of pounds of cane to the mills daily.

“Cane grows an inch a day during the middle of summer,” Ricky Gonsoulin said. “You get some 70-degree nights. It grows an inch a day with some good moisture. So, the moisture helps it grow to where you see it now, nice and tall and straight. Without the rain, you won’t get any growth.”…
