Barbara Eden Reflects on Elvis Presley: A Gentleman and a ‘Fine Actor’ Beyond the Stage
At 94 years young, iconic I Dream of Jeannie star Barbara Eden continues to hold fond memories of her time working alongside the legendary Elvis Presley. The pair co-starred in the 1960 Western film Flaming Star, and six decades later, Eden still “gushes” about the King of Rock and Roll, praising his often-overlooked acting talents and his gentlemanly demeanor.
In a recent interview, Eden recalled Presley’s performance in Flaming Star with admiration. “I remember how good he was.
He was a fine actor,” she stated, emphasizing that his role “was a part that required good acting, and he did it, boy.” She believes many didn’t fully appreciate his dramatic capabilities.
“I just think people didn’t recognize or appreciate what a fine actor he was, and a lovely, lovely man.”
The film, however, wasn’t an immediate blockbuster success. Eden revealed she “didn’t make any money” from its initial release, attributing this partly to fans’ disappointment that Presley didn’t sing.
To address this, Eden and Presley reconnected to film an additional scene, a lighthearted moment featuring Presley with his guitar while Eden humorously described herself as “hopping around the table.” Despite the initial reception, Eden fondly remembered the entire production, calling it “a beautiful piece.”
Beyond the cameras, Eden painted a picture of a warm and engaging colleague. She “just loved working with him,” recalling how Presley would often have his father and a friend visit the set. Between takes, they would “play their guitars and sing,” creating a lively atmosphere.
During an appearance at Christmas Con in August 2022, Eden further elaborated on her positive experience, describing Presley as “a delight,” “fabulous,” and “so wonderful.” She highlighted his exceptional character, noting he was “a gentleman” with her. Unlike many of his leading ladies, Eden confirmed, “I didn’t have a romance with Elvis.”
Their dynamic was one of genuine friendship and respect. Eden shared a particular anecdote that underscored his thoughtfulness: Presley would consistently get her a chair when she came onto the set.
“Actors don’t do that. You can sit on the floor, they don’t care,” she explained, emphasizing how Presley stood apart from others in his consideration.
In one memorable conversation, Presley confided in Eden about “this girl in Germany” he had recently met—who would later become his wife, Priscilla Presley. Eden remembered him admitting at the time, “I’m not too sure, she’s awfully young.” It’s clear that even after all these years, Barbara Eden cherishes her memories of Elvis Presley, not just as a star, but as a truly kind and talented individual.
