Researchers seek public help in study of mysterious lake foam for PFAS

NORTHERN MICHIGAN., (WPBN/WGTU) – – Researchers from Western Michigan University, in collaboration with the Michigan Geological Survey, are calling on lakefront property owners across the state to report sightings of mysterious white foam on lakes through 2026.

The study aims to determine if the foam contains PFAS, a group of “forever chemicals” that do not break down in the environment and may pose health risks.

Dr. Matt Reeves, a hydrogeologist at WMU, said, “If we find that there’s a lack of really concentrated PFAS in the foams that we’re sampling in the Michigan lakes, I think that’s a really positive outcome for HOAs, for individual real estate and home prices, things like that. If it’s the opposite or if it’s more mixed, then I think in one way or another, I think it’s the beginning of more studies on PFAS.”…
