The Tampa Police Department is ramping up its efforts to better ensure the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists on city streets. In collaboration with the Institute for Police Technology and Management (IPTM) and The University of North Florida (UNF), the department has committed to a statewide safety campaign, as reported by the City of Tampa’s official news outlet. Aimed at reducing the number of serious injuries and deaths resulting from traffic incidents, the campaign is set to run through May 2026.
As part of the initiative, Tampa law enforcement is to visibly increase their presence in several high-traffic areas. This push for safer roadways comes with the agenda to not only enforce laws but to also actively engage in educating those traveling these thoroughfares. “This campaign is about saving lives and preventing tragedies before they happen,” Police Chief Lee Bercaw stated, according to an article published by the Tampa government. Targeted enforcement alongside educational outreach will act in concert, they hope, to cultivate a mutual respect among pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike.
Specific focus will be directed to corridors known for their bustling activity and heightened safety concerns, such as East Busch Boulevard, West Hillsborough Avenue, and several others, including pivotal downtown locations.
