WINCHESTER, Ky. — A Wednesday traffic stop on Interstate 64 resulted in a significant drug seizure and the arrest of three individuals after a police K-9 located suspected fentanyl and methamphetamine in their vehicle.
The incident occurred on September 24, 2025, when Winchester Police Narcotics Detectives pulled over a Chevrolet passenger car on I-64 Eastbound near exit 96 for multiple traffic violations.
According to the Winchester Police Department, K-9 Officer Blake Gabbard and his partner, K-9 Jensik, conducted a free-air sniff around the vehicle. After the K-9 gave a positive indication for the presence of narcotics, detectives searched the car and seized 36 grams of Fentanyl and 30 grams of Methamphetamine.
Three people were arrested at the scene:
- Thomas McCarty, 35, the driver of the vehicle, was charged with Aggravated Trafficking of 10 or more grams of Fentanyl. Jail records show he was also cited for speeding, obstructed windshield, and failure to have his license in possession.
- Steven Preston, 39, a passenger, was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance (Fentanyl). He was also served an outstanding warrant for numerous other serious charges, including Burglary in the 1st Degree, Burglary in the 3rd Degree, and Theft by Unlawful Taking of an automobile. He is being held on cash bonds totaling $27,000.
- Haley Brotherton, a second passenger, was arrested and served with two outstanding warrants. At the time of this report, she was not listed as an inmate in the Clark County Detention Center.
