Popular Corn Dogs Recalled After Injury Reports

Haltom City, TX – Hillshire Brands, a subsidiary of Tyson Foods, has issued a nationwide recall for approximately 58 million pounds of various corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products. The recall stems from reports of wood fragments found embedded in the batter, with several consumers having already reported injuries.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday that the recall covers select State Fair corn dogs, as well as Jimmy Dean “Pancakes & Sausage On a Stick” and “French Toast & Sausage On a Stick” products.

The issue came to light after Hillshire Brands received numerous consumer complaints, five of which involved injuries. The company later traced the problem to a “limited number” of products containing “extraneous pieces of wooden stick within the batter,” initiating the recall “out of an abundance of caution.”

These affected products were manufactured between March 17 and as recently as Friday at a single facility located in Haltom City, Texas. FSIS officials are concerned that many of these recalled items may still be present in consumer refrigerators and freezers across the country. In addition to widespread sales to retailers and online, the products were also distributed to school districts and Defense Department facilities.

Consumers in possession of any of the recalled items are strongly urged to dispose of them or return them to their original place of purchase. To determine if a product is part of the recall, consumers should check the product’s name, use-by dates, and look for an establishment number of “EST-582” or “P-894” on the packaging.

For questions concerning the recall, consumers may contact Christina Self, The Hillshire Brands Company Associate Director of Customer Care, at 888-747-7611. The process for consumer refunds for these recalled products has not yet been clarified.

Foreign object contamination remains one of the primary reasons for food recalls in the United States, with a variety of materials, including plastic and metal fragments, occasionally making their way into packaged goods.
