World Heart Day: Health officials share risk factors, symptoms and more

RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Sept. 29 marks World Heart Day, prompting Richmond and Henrico Health Districts (RHHD) to remind people of how they can decrease their risk of heart disease and stroke.

The number one cause of death in Virginia is heart disease, said officials. In the United States alone, someone has a heart attack every 40 seconds, per a release.

“Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both Richmond City and Henrico County, and our region has higher hospitalizations rates for heart disease and hypertension than the state average,” said RHHD population health manager Tamara Jones-Groves. “Small steps like eating healthy, staying active, and getting regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can save lives.”…
