Lubbock mom calls son’s death a ‘senseless crime’ after suspect’s charge is dropped

LUBBOCK, Texas — Dalequavion Barnard York, 17, was killed in a shooting at an afterhours club south of Lubbock on August 25, 2024. His family told EverythingLubbock.com they felt they didn’t get the chance to be his voice after his life was cut short.

Dazaun Jones, 19, was previously indicted for murder, among several other charges in connection with the shooting. On September 23, his murder charge was dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to Deadly Conduct by Discharging a Firearm. Jones was sentenced to three years in prison.

His attorney said the state agreed the shooting was self-defense. The District Attorney’s office said it could not provide a statement due to other defendants with pending cases: Byron Hawkins, Jr., Christen Nelson, Joshua Price and Lavarius Scott.

Video of the shooting showed Hawkins, Scott and Jones arrive in a vehicle together in the 9200 block of Highway 87, walk in and split up. Court documents said Jones and Scott were seen shooting into a crowd of people, specifically in the direction of Nelson and Dalequavion. Court records said video showed Dalequavion firing a gun. Dalequavion tried to run, then fell to the ground, according to court documents. At least five people suffered gunshot wounds…
