Plans for Route 66 Gateway monument unveiled in Springfield

Springfield is set to the be host city for the centennial celebration honoring Route 66 and plans are already being made to make the city more appealing to the many visitors expected in April 2026.

The plans include a new structure that will span across St. Louis Street near the Rail Haven Hotel on Glenstone Avenue as well as a large scale sculpture series that will be seen throughout the city.

President and CEO of Visit Springfield Mark Hecquet gave an update on what he called “Route 66 Centennial Experiential Projects” at a City Council Lunch meeting in late August.

Hecquet called the anticipated centennial celebration as “one of the biggest events Springfield has ever seen.”…
