Elderly Alabama Man Sues After Vicious Dog Attack in His Driveway
BRENT, AL – An 81-year-old Alabama man has filed a lawsuit against his neighbors following a brutal dog attack in his own driveway that left him with severe, life-altering injuries.
According to the legal complaint, Jamie Boyd lost an estimated 50 percent of his body’s muscle tissue, and his scalp was “viciously and violently torn from his skull” during the assault. His wife, who witnessed the horrific event from their porch, was reportedly “traumatized” by what she saw unfold.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 24, as Boyd walked down his driveway. The lawsuit alleges he was set upon by seven dogs, identified as pitbulls and pitbull mixes. The mauling resulted in “catastrophic bleeding, extreme pain, and permanent disfigurement.”
The dogs continued their attack for an extended period, “tearing his flesh and muscle, leaving his limbs shredded and mangled.” Boyd’s wife, who has limited mobility and uses a walker, attempted to reach him but fell, and was subsequently charged by one of the aggressive animals.
Fortunately, law enforcement arrived on the scene. Brent Police Chief Carl McMillan intervened, firing a shot into the air which successfully scared the dogs away. Boyd was transported to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he is currently in the Intensive Care Unit and is scheduled to undergo surgery.
The lawsuit names William and Lacey Mitchell, Boyd’s neighbors, as defendants, asserting that the couple failed in their responsibility to restrain or confine their dogs.
Separate Incident: Human Remains Discovered by Family Dog
This harrowing event comes months after a separate, equally disturbing incident in another Alabama community, where a family dog repeatedly brought human remains from a nearby wooded area, sparking a chilling homicide investigation.
Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department responded to a Center Point home on August 9, after the homeowner reported that their 2-year-old German Shepherd mix, Chicarin, had once again brought what appeared to be part of a human skeleton onto their property.
The recovered remains were sent to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office for examination. Deputies also conducted a detailed search of the adjacent woods, where additional human remains were discovered.
Homeowner Paulina Mejia told local outlets that upon finding the bone in her front yard, her immediate thought was, “Oh, she did it again.”
This investigation began earlier in August when Mejia’s husband first spotted the family’s two dogs, Chicarin and another dog named Chicarone, playing with a human skull on the roadway next to their home. “He just saw her with the other dog playing with a skull,” Mejia recounted.
“My husband was like, ‘This does not look right.’ He called the police.
They didn’t believe it was human remains until detectives came out here.”
