Sir Gary Oldman Honored with Knighthood by Prince William at Windsor Castle
Oscar-winning actor Gary Oldman received a prestigious knighthood from Prince William on Tuesday, September 30, during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle, an honor that left the veteran performer deeply moved and delighted.
The 67-year-old actor knelt before the 43-year-old Prince of Wales, who officially bestowed upon him the title of Knight Bachelor by tapping his shoulders with a sword. The ceremony recognized Oldman’s extensive and impactful contributions to the world of film and acting over several decades.
The Prince and Princess of Wales acknowledged the significant achievement, sharing a photo of Sir Gary at the ceremony and conveying their congratulations. “Congratulations on your knighthood, Sir Gary Oldman,” they stated, adding a broader message of recognition: “Well done to everyone receiving honours today.”
During a brief exchange with the future king, Oldman reportedly learned that Prince William is a fan of his Apple TV+ series, Slow Horses. The Prince light-heartedly remarked about Oldman’s often unkempt appearance in the show, quipping, “I just want to give you a good wash.” Oldman humorously responded, “Well, I think I’ve scrubbed up OK today.”
Speaking to The Standard about the experience, Oldman described it as “emotional. Very emotional.”
He expressed profound gratitude and humility. “I think I feel very honoured, very humbled and flattered, I think in equal measure,” he said.
Comparing it to past accolades, Oldman stated, “It compares to nothing else. It’s a singular event…
I thought the Oscar was a big deal. No disrespect to the academy, but it sort of pales in comparison to this.
It’s just been wonderful.” He also noted Prince William’s expressed happiness at having the opportunity to present the honor himself.
Throughout his distinguished career, Oldman has captivated audiences with a diverse range of iconic portrayals, including Sirius Black in the Harry Potter film series, Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour (for which he won an Oscar), Commissioner Gordon in The Dark Knight, and the titular character in 1992’s Dracula, among many others.
News of the knighthood quickly resonated with fans online, who flooded social media with messages of praise and congratulations. “Raise Sir Gary Oldman!
So well deserved!” one user posted, while another declared, “If there’s anyone who ever deserved to be knighted for acting, it’s gotta be Sir Gary Oldman.”
Many echoed sentiments of him being a “brilliant actor” and “so deserving a knighthood.”
