Gov. Whitmer, Ford announce $1.54M investment in high-tech learning labs for Michigan schools

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Governor Gretchen Whitmer, along with Ford Motor Company, Ford Philanthropy, and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC), has announced a $1.54 million investment to create new, high-tech learning labs in partnership with Detroit Public Schools Community District, Marshall Public Schools, and schools in the Battle Creek area.

This initiative, called Ford Future Builders Labs, aims to benefit nearly 7,300 K–12 students and 75 teachers by providing hands-on learning experiences that build skills for careers in skilled trades, advanced manufacturing, and the auto industry.

The Key Goals of the Future Builders Labs are:

  • Modernize classrooms with state-of-the-art tools like 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers.
  • Support teachers in delivering real-world learning focused on robotics, mechatronics, and manufacturing.
  • Engage students in designing, building, and testing solutions to real-world challenges.
  • Introduce career pathways early, especially in advanced tech and sustainable energy fields like semiconductors, aerospace, mobility, and electric vehicles
