$120,000 a Year for a Motel Bed: L.A.’s Price of Delay in Homeless Settlement

LOS ANGELES – New figures approved at City Hall last week show the high price of Los Angeles’ slow progress on homelessness.

Some motel programs now cost taxpayers more than $120,000 per bed each year, a staggering expense tied directly to the city’s delays in meeting a federal court order.

On September 25, the City Council’s Housing and Homelessness Committee approved a report from the City Administrative Officer (CAO) dated September 16. The report, supplemented by an update on September 24, offers the most detailed snapshot yet of how much the city is spending to comply with the LA Alliance for Human Rights settlement, and how close Los Angeles remains to falling short of its legal obligations…
