AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Amarillo Independent School District Police Department announced that the department has a new Chief of Police, Ramey Rice, who was sworn in on Sept. 29.
According to AISD officials, Rice is a graduate of Midwestern State University and has worked in school-based law enforcement since 2015. Rice has also been an AISD Police Officer since 2023. Officials noted Rice said that school-based law enforcement is an opportunity to impact the future by building trust with students beginning in elementary school to help shape the way they view law enforcement.

“‘We’re really fortunate we get to start in elementaries. I really think in the next five to ten years we’ll start to see a big shift in behavior in middle schools and high schools because these kids are going to have relationships with us and know police officers,” Rice said.
AISD officials also noted that Rice helped save the life of a spectator who had suffered a medical emergency at Dick Bivins Stadium, and Rice will receive a life-saving commendation for his efforts. Rice is succeeding Paul Bourquin, who moved on to pursue other opportunities…
