Rep. Tim Moore introduces bill aimed at holding judges accountable after violent crimes committed by repeat offenders

WASHINGTON, D.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – One day after the House Judiciary Subcommittee held a field hearing in Charlotte over how to reduce violent crime, Congressman Tim Moore has proposed the Judicial Accountability for Public Safety Act.

The legislation aims to hold judges civilly liable when criminals are released and subsequently harm others. Specifically, this act will allow for victims or their families to sue judges when they feel a bond or sentencing decision was made with gross negligence or intentional disregard for public safety.

At this point, it’s been over a month since Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee, was fatally stabbed on the city’s Blue Line light rail. The suspect in her murder, Decarlos Brown Jr., has a lengthy criminal history, and the incident brought a renewed focus to concerns over the justice system’s handling of repeat offenders…
