Public comment open for input on how to improve Big I traffic congestion

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico Department of Transportation has launched a public comment period for the community to give their input on the I-40 and I-25 interchange. This interchange, where the I-40 westbound and eastbound ramps meet I-25 north, has been an ongoing problem for community members as the westside population has grown.

Now, NMDOT is ready to take action, asking the public to give their opinions. “It’s areas where we see improvement needed,” Kimberly Gallegos said with NMDOT District 3. “Right now, we see backups and areas that bottleneck.”

NMDOT said they recognize the city has grown and the current infrastructure is two decades old. The areas they’re targeting are the off-ramps where both I-40 eastbound and westbound funnel into I-25 northbound. They’re also looking into improving the off-ramp from I-25 to the Comanche exit. “Our city has continued to grow, and the Big I is 20 years old,” Gallegos said. “We aren’t looking at the whole entire reconstruction of the Big I. This study is focusing on traffic congestion through those areas.”…
