Maryland man sentenced for murder of Wintergreen police officer

NELSON COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – Daniel Barmak, the Maryland man who pleaded guilty to killing Wintergreen police officer Mark Christopher Wagner II in the summer of 2023, will spend nearly 50 years in prison.

During a sentencing hearing Monday in Nelson County Circuit Court, a judge sentenced Barmak, 25, to a total of 48 years behind bars — 40 years for second-degree murder, three years for using a firearm to commit a felony, and 40 years on two counts of malicious wounding, with all but five of those years suspended. Barmak pleaded guilty to these charges in February.

The charges and sentence stem from an incident when Wagner responded to a 911 call alleging Barmak assaulted two men after taking psychedelic mushrooms and ketamine.
