Squirrel wars: Durham considers rules for feeding birds and other wildlife

The Durham City Council is taking the first steps toward possibly regulating whether residents can feed wildlife in their yards, a move sparked by pesky squirrels

The ordinance idea follows a complaint from a resident of the Trotter Ridge subdivision, who said wildlife feeding had attracted a scurry of squirrels and other unwelcome wildlife to his neighborhood in southern Durham.

Squirrels have caused property damage for many residents by chewing on car wires and fuel lines and making nests in chimneys, attics and car engines.
