San Diego leads California in affordable housing construction, report says

SAN DIEGO — San Diego is outpacing other major California cities in building affordable housing, according to an annual report on home construction released on Monday.

Mayor Todd Gloria celebrated the city’s progress, noting that San Diego issued permits for 8,782 new homes last year, surpassing Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and Fresno in new home permits per capita.

“And you all know I’m a little bit competitive, so get a load of this, San Diego is leading the way across California when it comes to new housing,” said Gloria.

The mayor attributes much of this success to initiatives like the Affordable Housing Permit Now Program, implemented by executive order, which requires applications for 100% affordable housing projects to be reviewed within 30 days or less…
