The foodie publication’s No. 1 pick is the Beltline Bar in Grand Rapids, which claims to have invented the wet burrito. Known for its Tex-Mex cuisine, the Beltline Bar is a Grand Rapids institution—it first opened in 1953!

The Famous Wet Burritos at Beltline Bar

How did the Beltline Bar come to create the wet burrito? According to Grand Rapids Magazine, new owners took over in 1958 and instituted the Tex-Mex menu. One day some extra large tortillas were delivered by mistake. Instead of sending them back, the cook on duty used them for massive burritos. He topped them with a mix of brown gravy and ranchero sauce. Obviously it was a hit, as earlier this year the Beltline Bar served its 6 millionth wet burrito!

There are eleven burritos on the menu, including Chicken Asado, Garden Veggie, and Grilled Fajita. As far as “The Famous“, it’s seasoned ground beef, refried beans, lettuce, and tomato, wrapped in a flour tortilla and topped with burrito sauce and Colby cheese. If that doesn’t sound like quite enough to fill you up, go for “The Big and Famous”—which is TWICE the size of the original.
