Imelda becomes a hurricane, moves away from the US towards Bermuda

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Imelda strengthened to a hurricane Tuesday morning. It’s already turning to the northeast, moving away from the US.

The storm moves northeast as it continues to strengthen, possibly becoming a category 2 hurricane as it passes over Bermuda Wednesday night.

Humberto is weakening as it starts to make it’s curve to the north and eventually to the northeast. It’s a category 2 hurricane but expected to weaken rapidly to a tropical storm by Thursday morning as it makes a loop around Bermuda Tuesday and Wednesday.

Imelda is being pulled east into the Atlantic by the stronger Humberto. The two storms are close enough to interact in a pseudo-Fujiwhara effect. When two tropical systems are within 870 miles of each other, they can get pulled towards each other and will do a “dance” around each other. They some times orbit each other, then head in different directions, or the stronger storm absorbs the weaker one or very rarely, the two combine into a stronger more powerful storm…
