A massive stretch of a California highway was shut down following an Amtrak train with roughly 260 passengers onboard colliding with a semi-truck Wednesday afternoon.
The two large vehicles crashed at around 4:15 p.m. PT along the train tracks near Brown Road in the Santa Maria area, according to authorities. The crash caused a large portion of Highway 1 to be shut down for several hours due to abut 3,500 gallons of diesel fuel spilling on the roadway, according to local authorities.
Santa Barbara County Fire Department Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck told the San Luis Obispo Tribune that the train may have derailed following the collision but remained upright and had “diesel fuel all over it.”
The driver of the semi-truck was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with major injuries by American Medical Response ambulance, Safechuck told the outlet. Three passengers aboard the Amtrak train were also transported to the hospital with minor injuries…
