It’s a marvel of man-made engineering, and Coloradans have the chance to witness it up close, when Union Pacific’s Big Boy 4014 steam locomotive makes two stops in Northern Colorado on September 30 and October 1, 2025.
How Much Does the Only Working Big Boy Locomotive Weigh?
The Big Boy locomotives were commissioned exclusively for Union Pacific Railroad in 1941 to help with the war effort. They made only 25 of them, and today only one is still in operations: Big Boy 4014 weighs, like they all did, 1.2 million pounds. There are seven others that remain, but only 4014 travels the country, after being rebuilt in 2019.
