ACLU of Nevada criticizes DOJ investigation into UNR as politically motivated

The American Civil Liberties Union of Nevada has expressed strong criticism of the Department of Justice’s investigation into the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), labeling it as politically motivated.

Athar Haseebullah, executive director of the ACLU of Nevada, stated, “I’m not particularly shocked. I mean we have an acting U.S. Attorney who’s questionably serving in her role right now and that’s being challenged by the Federal Public Defender’s Office.” Haseebullah further accused the administration of attempting to “sow as much chaos as they can” and targeting a university led by “one of the finest presidents in the country.”

UNR President Brian Sandoval released a statement Tuesday morning addressing the investigation but did not confirm whether the university assists undocumented immigrants. Haseebullah commented on Sandoval’s statement, saying, “President Sandoval, like most Nevadans, is committed to making sure that people are treated fairly for undocumented students.”…
