A North Carolina couple was devastated to lose their family home to flooding in Hurricane Helene last year. Then, they made an amazing discovery that left them feeling “thankful.”

The Asheville home previously belonged to Stephen’s father, per local outlet WLOS. When he died in the 1990s, Stephen remained in the house and then met his wife, Theresa, a few years later. The couple welcomed their first child in the house before moving to nearby Fairview, N.C., in the mid-1990s. Stephen’s stepmother lived in the home until shortly before the hurricane.

At the time the category 4 storm swept through the region in September 2024, the home was vacant. Flooding along the Swannanoa River lifted the house off its foundation…
