A person is driving, sometime between sunset and sunrise. Suddenly, a deer runs out into the road.
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and its partners want to make sure members of the public do what they can to avoid a crash.

There were 566 deer-related crashes reported in PennDOT’s northwest region in 2024. The region includes Crawford, Erie, Forest, Mercer, Venango and Warren counties. That’s the highest number of deer-related crashes in the region since 2020.
There are several measures that PennDOT suggests to help avoid deer-related crashes. These include slowing down near deer crossing signs, following cars at a greater distance and never driving under the influence.

Mike Tautin, a community traffic safety project coordinator with the Highway Safety Network, shared some more tips. “Start by eliminating all potential distractions,” Tautin said. “Set your music and GPS before you leave and always keep your eyes on the road so you can react to the unexpected, which can oftentimes be a deer or other animal crossing in front of you.”…
