Alabama enacts stricter gun law to curb violence, enhancing felony classifications

The new Alabama law that aims to reduce inner-city gun violence through stricter firearm possession prohibitions and increased penalties for certain offenses is now in effect as of today.

Under the new law, it will be classified as a Class C felony for individuals to possess a firearm if they have been convicted of any felony offense within the past five years or have three felony convictions at any time. Additionally, possessing a firearm while out on bail awaiting trial for certain prescribed offenses, such as violent crimes, will also be considered a Class C felony.

The law also elevates the penalty for shooting into an occupied dwelling from a Class B felony to a Class A felony. Furthermore, it introduces new sanctions for probationers and parolees found in possession of a firearm, including mandatory revocation of probation or parole upon conviction for illegal firearm possession…
