‘He took our whole future’: Family says plea deal in son’s killing is injustice

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A teenager is set to be sentenced Friday for a northwest Bakersfield stabbing that left a man dead.

The victim’s family said the plea deal their brother’s killer received is ridiculous and from the beginning they wanted a trial. A late night last October was the last night 20-year-old Lawrence Leyvas would see after a fight broke out on Stone River Court in northwest Bakersfield.

Lawrence Leyvas’ father described an emotional moment he had the day his son was killed. His son was singing a song from the police in the shower and when he got out, “he wraps his arms around me, from behind, and he sings ‘message in a bottle’, and kisses me on the cheek.”…
