18-Year-Old Charged as an Adult in Jacksonville Man’s Fatal Shooting After Attempted Car Burglary

An 18-year-old, identified as Andre Thomas, has been charged with the fatal shooting of a 39-year-old man, Donte Swan, that took place earlier this May. The shooting incident occurred on Thursday, May 15, when District 4 Patrol officers responded to a 911 call at a residence on Wheat Road, near Ricker Road in Jacksonville, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO).

Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered Swan suffering from two gunshot wounds. He was quickly attended to by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) personnel and transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. The initial investigation indicated that Swan had confronted a group attempting to break into cars on his property, leading to him being shot by the then-17-year-old Thomas. With the ongoing investigation, a warrant was executed for Thomas’s arrest while he was already detained for an unrelated charge.

JSO Homicide Unit detectives, alongside JSO’s Crime Analysis and Crime Scene Units and the Real Time Crime Center, gathered evidence to substantiate Thomas’ involvement in the murder. Their findings revealed that Thomas was linked to a larger group implicated in stealing a car, driving to the vicinity of the crime, and committing several vehicle break-ins before the deadly confrontation ensnared Swan in its violent conclusion…
