Birding Tours in Port Aransas

Take Flight in Port Aransas, Texas

Nestled along the Texas Gulf Coast, Port Aransas sits directly under the path of the Central Flyway, making it a prime stopover for migrating birds every spring and fall. But that’s not all, thanks to its many habitats (marshes, bays, estuaries, barrier islands, and woodlands), Port Aransas also draws an impressive variety of resident species year after year. Whether you visit during the height of migration or in the quiet months of summer or winter, the sky and shores here are alive with wings, calls, and color. From stately herons and shorebirds to raptors and songbirds, birding in Port Aransas offers something everyone can enjoy.

Why Port Aransas is a Birding Paradise

Port Aransas’ magic lies in its biodiversity and range of habitats. Salt marshes, tidal flats, wetlands, woodlands, and sandy beaches all coexist here, creating an environment where hundreds of species thrive. Seasonal migrations bring waves of new arrivals, while resident species keep birding exciting any time of year.

The crown jewel? The Whooping Crane, the tallest and rarest bird in North America. Each winter, these endangered giants return to the nearby Aransas National Wildlife Refuge and surrounding wetlands, offering birders a chance to witness a true conservation success story.

Whooping Crane Festival

Each February, Port Aransas celebrates its most famous feathered visitors at the Whooping Crane Festival. This multi-day event combines expert lectures, guided tours, photography workshops, and family activities, all centered around conservation and appreciation of these endangered birds. For birders, it’s both a cultural highlight and a chance to meet others who share the passion.

Guided Birding Tours

Joining a guided birding tour during the Whooping Crane Festival can enrich the experience. Expert guides know the best spots, help identify tricky species, and share insights into bird behavior and local ecology. Tours are especially valuable for beginners or anyone hoping to spot rarities like the whooping crane. Many local outfitters also provide binoculars and spotting scopes, so you can travel light.

  • Whooping Crane Boat Tours go to the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. The lowest impact way to see these birds is from the water looking onto the Refuge, and there is no better way to see them than in the comfort of Port Aransas Fisherman’s Wharf’s Wharf Cat or Scat Cat.
  • Birding & Nature Boat Tours navigate the local waterways. You will see dolphins, many different species of birds, and great shorelines, including the Lydia Ann Lighthouse. Guides will be there to help identify what’s flying high! This trip also includes a “trawl” which brings sea life to a touch-tank on the boat.
  • Sunset Wine, Birding, & Dolphin Tours head out from the Scarlet Lady at Deep Sea Headquarters in Port Aransas for a 90-minute tour of the channel and bay. Get ready for a fun-filled cruise with sightseeing, dolphins, and birds as the sun sets. Wine and cheese will be provided, and a cash bar is available.
  • On the Photography & Birdwatching Boat Trip, you will join Scott Holt and Kathy Adams Clark for a cruise on the Mustang along the waters surrounding Port Aransas. This will be a slow cruise in the shallows of Humble Basin and Inner Basin that then rounds through the canals past the Port Aransas Nature Preserve. Scott and Kathy will direct the Captain of the boat toward birds of interest.
  • The Fennessey Ranch Birding & Nature Tour is a bus trip to Fennessey Ranch, which is in the heart of the Central Flyway and provides world-class birding opportunities. More than 420 species of resident and migratory birds have been recorded on the Ranch, including painted buntings, green jays, swallow-tailed kites, white-tailed hawks, crested caracara, great kiskadee’s, and bald eagles, just to name a few. The Ranch has several custom-built birding and photography blinds.
