Springfield resident gets prison term after stealing mail

A Springfield man was sentenced on Sept. 30, 2025, to one year and three months in federal prison for stealing mail from residential mailboxes across the city. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Judge Stephen Bough.

Anthony Renell Williams, 45, pleaded guilty on March 31, 2025, to one count of mail theft stemming from an incident on March 16, 2023. Authorities said Williams was seen walking through multiple Springfield neighborhoods, stopping at mailboxes and taking items belonging to residents. Witnesses alerted the Springfield Police Department to his suspicious behavior.

Officers responded and located Williams, who had stolen mail in his possession. The United States Postal Inspection Service later reviewed security footage from area homes, which showed Williams removing mail from residential boxes…
