Alabama has the highest percentage of people who identify themselves as Christians, according to one of the most authoritative national surveys.
In Alabama, 89 percent of people surveyed identify themselves as Christians, according to the Pew Research Center’s 2023-2024 Religious Landscape Study, published this year. That ranked Alabama first among the 50 states, followed by Louisiana at 87 percent; Mississippi at 85 percent; South Dakota at 84 percent and Tennessee at 83 percent.
The Pew study used quite a few categories to measure overall religiosity and settled on Mississippi as the most religious state, based on how many people say religion is very important in their lives (61 percent), how many say they pray daily (62 percent) and attend religious services at least once a month (54 percent) and believe in God with absolute certainty (74 percent)…
