A weapons detection system at a Virginia middle school identified a loaded firearm in a students backpack Wednesday morning, prompting a swift police response and renewed focus on school safety measures.
Henrico County Police said the incident occurred around 8:15 a.m. Wednesday, when a 12-year-old student at Fairfield Middle School in Richmond passed through the schools weapons scanner. Administrators called 911 after the device flagged a possible weapon and staff confirmed a firearm was in the students backpack. Police determined the gun was loaded.
