Teen Fatally Shot After Hunter Mistakes Him For Squirrel Near Iowa City

A 17-year-old boy was tragically killed after a hunter reportedly mistook him for a squirrel while hunting near Iowa City.

According to CBS News, Carson Ryan was out hunting squirrels with a group when one of the members accidentally fired the fatal shot. He was struck in the back of the head around 3 p.m. Saturday. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) confirmed the shooting and said Ryan was rushed to the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center, where he later died.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and IDNR officials are investigating the incident. Authorities have not yet released further details about the hunter involved or whether charges will be filed.
