Family of helicopter pilot killed in crash create foundation to help others

The family of John Grassia III, the New York Army National Guard helicopter pilot who died in a crash while on active duty last year, hosted the second annual golf tournament Friday morning at Stadium Golf Club in Schenectady.

Formed by Grassia’s relatives, the nonprofit John Grassia Foundation works to support military and first-responder families who face tragedies.

Grassia, 30, of Rotterdam, and Casey Frankoski, 28, of East Greenbush, were National Guard aviators killed in a helicopter crash last March near Rio Grande City, Texas, while on assignment with Joint Task Force North, a federal military mission that supports U.S. Customs and Border Protection Protection.
