1 dead, 1 in custody after officer-involved shooting

ST. PAULS — One man is dead and another is in custody after a search warrant resulted in the exchange of gunfire between a suspect and law enforcement on Thursday.

Thursday at approximately 1 p.m., Robeson County Sheriff’s Office investigators and SWAT operators, along with the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, Hope Mills Police Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), executed a search warrant at 416 Ice Cream Dr. in St. Pauls.

Upon the arrival of the Investigators and SWAT Operators, a suspect exited a camper with a rifle and fired multiple rounds at the investigators and SWAT operators. Investigators immediately returned fire and the suspect fled back into the camper. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiations Team responded to the scene and attempted to contact the occupants of the camper for over an hour. After several unsuccessful attempts, tear gas was deployed into the camper, and a female exited the residence. SWAT members entered the camper and found the suspect deceased…
