PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence City Council is trying to amend a 2017 ordinance in response to increased immigration enforcement.
On Monday night, the City Council’s Committee on Ordinances will discuss proposed amendments to the Community-Police Relations Act. The committee will also allow the public to weigh in at the meeting.
The act, which was signed into law in 2017 under then-Mayor Jorge Elorza, already prohibits Providence police from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status and overall, puts limits on how much police can cooperate with federal immigration authorities…
