MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The third day of October will forever be remembered as one of the darkest days in local law enforcement history.
Five years ago, Myrtle Beach Police Officer Jacob Hancher, 23, was shot and killed while he and other officers responded to a domestic incident at an apartment on 14th Avenue S. near Yaupon Drive. He had been with the department for less than a year.
For Florence law enforcement, Myrtle Beach officer death hits close to home
Two years earlier, in 2018, tragedy struck in Florence County as another shooting claimed the lives of Florence Police Department Sgt. Terrence Carraway and Florence County Sheriff’s Office investigator Farrah Turner. Five other officers were wounded in what became known as the Vintage Place shooting.
In Myrtle Beach, many who knew and loved Hancher gathered Friday morning at the Warren S. Gall Police Annex on Mustang Street to remember him and honor his sacrifice.
“It’s weird, because some days it feels like forever ago, and other days it feels like it was yesterday,” Officer Tim Murphy said in a video posted on Facebook by Myrtle Beach police. “There’s still certain things and certain places I go, like the movie theater or the House of Blues, where Jacob and I had been to before, where it’s like, you know, you just want to text Jake, ‘hey man, I’m going to this concert,’ and you realize he’s not here anymore.”…
