Father Convicted After Daughter Dies From Untreated Diabetes in Evansville

Evansville, IN – A 12-year-old girl’s death has led to a criminal conviction for her father, highlighting the dangers of neglecting serious medical conditions in children.

Father Found Legally Responsible

Brent Bredhold, 39, of Vanderburgh County, was convicted this week on one count of neglect of a dependent causing death. The jury ruled that his failure to properly care for his daughter directly contributed to her passing. Bredhold now faces up to 40 years in prison.

Tragic Death of Alice Bredhold

The victim, Alice Bredhold, was found deceased in her bedroom on July 4, 2024, at the family home on South New York Avenue, Evansville. Investigators confirmed she had Type 1 diabetes, a lifelong condition that requires consistent monitoring and treatment.

Vanderburgh County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Winston Lin said,

“This is a heartbreaking case where a 12-year-old girl with Type 1 diabetes was left to fend for herself until her untimely death. Her parents should have been her strongest advocates, but unfortunately all they had to offer was apathy, indifference, and neglect.”

Records show Alice frequently experienced dangerously high blood sugar readings while at school. A school nurse documented 44 readings above 300 and 14 readings above 600 in the weeks before her death.
