Stay safe online: AARP’s cybersecurity tips for October

ROANOKE, Va. (WFXR) – The AARP is advising residents that October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month and is warning about potential threats.

The AARP is reminding you that any device that stores information or has an internet connection can be a target for cybercriminals who hope to steal your data.

Here are four tips to stay safe online:

  1. Ensure to use strong, unique passwords for online accounts. However, use different passwords for each account you own. You can also use a low-cost password manager such as Bitwarden, Dashlane, LastPass, and others. You can also use your facial or fingerprint recognition.
  2. Use multi-factor authentication beyond just the normal username and password.
  3. Make sure ur device has automatic software updates to keep your device secure.
  4. Do not click on links from emails, texts, or online ads, but type the address into your browser to make sure it’s not a copycat site.

If you become a victim of a scam, report it to your local law enforcement. For more help from the AARP, call 1-877-908-3360 or visit the AARP Fraud Watch Network at www.aarp.org…
