AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Independent School District proposed a plan Friday that would close 13 schools and shift academic programs to address years of underfunding and a growing budget deficit.
The district revealed plans in a draft proposal to redraw 98% of existing attendance boundaries, relocate dual language and Montessori programs and repurpose schools for non-zoned elementary programs for the 2026-27 school year. Austin ISD said the consolidation and boundary change process are needed to address declining enrollment, staffing shortages and a lack of resources within the school system.
The schools listed for closure include:
- Barrington Elementary School
- Becker Elementary School
- Bryker Woods Elementary School
- Dawson Elementary School
- Maplewood Elementary School
- Oak Springs Elementary School
- Palm Elementary School
- Ridgetop Elementary School
- Sunset Valley Elementary School
- Widen Elementary School
- Winn Montessori Elementary School
